Urso and PBC

Brand name PBC treatments Actigall, URSO 250, URSO Forte and the generic version are confusing to many of our members.  What causes much of the confusion is many doctors and pharmacies use the same name "Urso" for all three.

Chemically all three are made from ursodeoxycholic acid but have different fillers.  They are not the same products and each has a different FDA approved indication.

Actigall (Ursodiol) 300 mg Capsules originally manufactured by Novartis, now Whatson and the generic form are indicated for patients with radiolucent, noncalcified gallbladder stones. Over the years Actigall showed to help in PBC and is prescribed by many doctors as PBC treatment.

URSO 250 (250 mg) and URSO Forte (500 mg) tablets made by Anxcan Pharma arethe only ursodiol product specifically for Primary Biliary Cirrhosis, as it has has the FDA approved PBC indication and extensive research testing was done.  See URSO/Actigall dosage chart by weight and cost.

Ursodiol by Amide Pharm 300 mg Capsules is the "generic" for Actigall........Not URSO 250 tablets.
