Research Update

Dr. Gershwin's Research Update October 08, l999

Results of the saliva study should be done in 4 to 6 weeks. Dr. Gershwin isn't giving me a clue, but says that "we are all very excited." He also informs me that the data from our original survey is being incorporated into another major grant to the National Institutes of Health. You may recall that his original grant submission was not funded. So, keep your fingers crossed. We need to get funding from the NIH for this important epidemiologic study of PBC

Dr. Gershwin reports that he has received great cooperation with respect to the family study, and notes that "it is the most important thing we are doing." In Japan, they have found out that if two members of a family have PBC, they get it within a few years of each other. This is not surprising for sisters but it is also true for mother-daughter PBC, suggesting an environmental influence.

Dr. Gershwin's study is now focusing ONLY on sib-sibs with PBC and STILL NEED MORE PEOPLE (SIBLINGS WHO HAVE PBC) TO PARTICIPATE IN HIS STUDY!!!!

Without additional participants, a genomic analysis is not possible. Essentially he is attempting to trying to do an analysis of all the genes in all sib-sibs to see what they share in common. SO PLEASE, if you have PBC and have a brother or sister with PBC, PLEASE megershwin@ucdavis.edu or call him at (530) 752-2884.
