HMOs to drop nearly 1 million Medicare beneficiaries

July 24, 2000

WASHINGTON (Reuters Health) - A total of 118 health maintenance organizations (HMOs) will either leave Medicare or reduce its presence in the program next year, forcing 934,000 Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in the health plans to look for alternative arrangements, the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) said Monday.

Of the 934,000 older and disabled Americans affected by HMO retrenchment in the Medicare+Choice program, 775,000 will be able to enroll in another Medicare HMO, if remaining health plans are accepting new enrollees, HCFA said. The other 159,000 beneficiaries impacted will have no other HMO from which to choose to receive Medicare benefits, and will have to rely largely on traditional fee-for-service Medicare.
