Itching in PBC:
Due to the retained bile salts deposited in the skin leading to pruritus (itching). The bile salts have an irritant effect on the skin which can be mild to severe. Most severe itching usually takes place in later stages.
Jaundice in PBC:
A yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, indicating excess bilirubin (bile pigment) in the blood. Jaundice occurs when bile made in the liver fails to reach the intestine. The urine becomes dark, the feces pale and itching more severe.
