Beaches: You
will love the beaches of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. They are clean and the
view is largely unencumbered by buildings. The main 26-mile beach area is
viewable from Beach Boulevard (U.S. Highway 90) with numerous pull-overs.
Restrooms and piers have been thoughtfully provided. You will find an assortment
of colorful beach chairs, sailboat and jet ski vendors. Build a beach sandcastle
anytime or go for the big prize money at the Sand Sculpture Contest in September.
There are quiet areas also. Some of the beach is reserved as a nesting
ground for Least Terns. Quiet beaches line the residential areas of Bay St.
Louis, Pass Christian, Long Beach to the west of Biloxi, and Ocean Springs,
Pascagoula to the east. These areas are great for sunbathing, romantic walks,
moonlight picnics, and campfires. The waters along the beach are calm. A
chain of barrier islands protects our shore from storms and limits the amount
of wave action that hits the beach. Rich nutrients flow in from the mouth
of the Mississippi River to provide excellent food for the bountiful seafood
here. You can swim without fear: there is no pollution, no under-tow and
no deep drop-offs. If surf is your priority, take the Ship Island ferry from
Gulfport or Biloxi harbor. The beautiful stretch of white sand on Ship Island
was named one of the top ten beaches in the United States by USA Today. There
are concessions, shelters and restrooms, bring the sunscreen, as the sun
can be fierce here. What could be more pleasant than a day on an island--yours
to explore, swim, fish or simply enjoy.
