School Project Teaches Lessons Of The Heart

SUMNER - It started out as a school assignment but it grew into much, much more. The assignment turned into valuable lessons about the gifts of life for high school senior Matt Vertrees.
Vertrees is a student at Sumner High School. He got the same assignment every high school senior got. He HAD to do a senior project. I use the word HAD which makes it sound like he didn't want to. But there's nothing further from the truth. "I wanted to raise awareness, definitely!" Vertrees said. "Yeah, that was my main goal. The awareness of it."
His project: Organ Donations. Vertrees held a fundraising dinner, raising $2,300. "Yeah, I'm very happy," Vertrees said. He was happy he could do it to honor his mom. "I was just wowed," said Anne Vertrees, Matt's mother. What we haven't told you is Anne may need to have a liver transplant. So, it's a senior project near and dear to Matt's heart. "Yes it is," he said.
Tuesday Vertrees was scheduled to present his senior project, so he hasn't received a grade yet. I'll bet he gets an A, and an E for effort!
