Fundraisers by PBCers
Update October 1999
Your Fund Raising Committee is pleased to provide the following report on fund raising activities related to the Fund for the Cure.
At its national board meeting in San Francisco last October, the American Liver Foundation launched the first-ever "PBC: Fund for the Cure" campaign to raise $1.5 million for research and education on PBC. Since then, the campaign has blossomed into a nationwide grassroots effort supported by numerous individuals, their families and friends.
As of October 6, 1999, the Fund has raised $302,278 in cash and pledges against our goal of $1.5 million. Among the "firsts" in the premier year of this campaign, our accomplishments include:
A "first" corporate pledge from Axcan-Schwarz, LLC;
A "first" foundation grant from the Abbott Laboratories Fund;
The formation of a PBC Fundraising Committee
Two ALF Chapters that pledged to raise $100,000 each; and,
More than 50 individuals who undertook a special fundraising effort on behalf of the campaign!
As we mark the first anniversary of this campaign, we wish to share with you the names and accomplishments of the volunteers who have contributed to this year's success or the Cure.

Here are some individual highlights
Judy Bartlett, Pawcatock, CT -
Judy spent the early part of her summer digging up, dividing, and potting over 1,300 perennials from her home garden and holding a plant sale. $2,559 was raised from the sale alone, and combined with other contributions, Judy and friends have contributed $2,600. Here's to a big heart, and a bigger green thumb!
Rosanne DiBlasio, Valley View, OH -
On September 19th, this dynamo held a dinner/dance event that raised close to $9,000 in net proceeds to benefit the Fund.
Flo Dubuc, Bedford, NH -
Flo not only sent out letters to friends and family for solicitations, but also held a car wash on July 25th. Total raised: $155!
Neil Martinson and Gayle Jacobson, Copperton, UT -
A big thanks to Neil, Gayle and the Bingham Canyon Lions Club which made the "PBC: Fund for the Cure" its designated charity. To date, the Lions have forwarded just over $3,000 in proceeds from the gift shop they run at the local copper mine which attracts lots of tourists every summer.
ALF -- Greater Los Angeles Chapter Liver Walk Team -
Led by team captain, Rhea Meshakow, a PBC team got together at the California Liver Walk in May to raise a total of $3,150. Team members were: Margarita Acosta, Kevin Ballin, Alice DeLuca, Rita Kramer, Caryl Mindlin, Pam Schofield, Lynn Sibert, Jean Louise Smith, Kelly, Smith, Marlena Laura Smith, Yvette Smith, Mark Smith Jr., Jackie Staley, Christopher Sukal, Cristina Sukal, Daniel J. Sukal, Gia Youngblood, and Shawn Youngblood.
Special thanks go to so many others, including: Arlene DeCicco, Alice Greene, Tom and Elaine Linders, Charlotte McClurg, Betty Talley, who all made special efforts writing letters or passing out information about the "PBC: Fund for the Cure" to family, friends, co-workers, and others. As a result, ALF received many generous contributions on behalf of the Fund.
Other activities in progress include: Elena DiGregorio is having a penny social at her local church; and Debra Vincent, and Pat Kielty, are preparing to send out personal solicitation letters.
Special mentions: In June, Karen Luna and Jean Hayes met with Jim Nabors (yes, of "Gomer Pyle" fame!) backstage when he was giving a concert in Branson, MO. Mr. Nabors, who received a liver transplant a few years ago due to hepatitis B, showed his support for PBCers by signing a square of Jean's PBC quilt. Many of you saw the quilt at last year's convention in
Las Vegas. Marian Moyer posted a commentary to her local paper, the Naples Daily News which appeared on April 15, 1999. Thanks to her effort, a lot more people in Naples, FL know about PBC and the battle ahead of us!
Many others have recently requested pledge cards and brochures, and have submitted ideas for fund raising activities. While this is great progress, we have a way to go to meet our goal of $1.5 million, which we'd like to achieve by the time of our convention.
The search for cures cannot advance without research. By joining this national effort, all members of the ALF and PBC community can come together to make a difference for future generations of women and men affected by this liver disease.
We want to send a BIG thank you to all the individuals who have sent in their personal donations or made pledges towards the Fund.
IF YOU HAVEN'T MADE YOUR OWN CONTRIBUTION YET, PLEASE KNOW THAT ALL GIFTS, WHATEVER AMOUNT, ARE DEEPLY DEEPLY APPRECIATED.
Your personal gift to the Fund may be made through a pledge, in cash, or appreciated stock. Gifts may also be made in honor/in memory of a family member, friend, or other loved one. Do it now!
Sincerely,
Your Fundraising Committee:
